7. Arsalan, a successful entrepreneur, stood on the bustling platform of the railway station, having just bid farewell to his family, waiting for the Vandebharat Express. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a young woman sobbing. He recognised her as Asma, a distant relative, a recent graduate and she told him she had run away from home because her orthodox parents opposed her dream of preparing for the UPSC civil services exam and wanted her to get married instead. She only had enough money for a ticket to Delhi.

Her story reminded him of his own past struggles. Years ago, he had been in a similar position, dreaming of a career in civil services but without the financial means to support himself. It was his best friend Suhas who had come to his rescue, providing the necessary funds and encouragement. Arsalan had promised Suhas that once he made it, he would help others in need. Though he could not clear civil service examination but he later achieved success as an entrepreneur and he had forgotten about that promise up until this point.

Faced with an ethical dilemma, Arsalan wanted to help Asma but was concerned about the legal ramifications of supporting her against her parents’ wishes especially because of the fear of fake cases being filed against him as Asma’s father was notorious for pulling such antics in the past.

What are the major dilemmas that Arsalan faces? What are the options available to Arsalan? Critically analyse each of them. Which option should Arsalan chose? Why do many girls like Asma face such restrictions in the society? What can be done in that regard at a macro level?
