PM Modi inaugurates IIM Guwahati; Rs 555 crore sanctioned for campus development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday virtually inaugurated the academic session of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati, marking a significant milestone for higher education in Assam and the Northeast. The session has begun at a temporary transit campus located at Tech City, Bongora (Pongora), spread over 6,410 square metres. The institute will later shift to its permanent campus, which is coming up at Marabhita (Marapita) in Kamrup district near Palasbari. The permanent campus will be developed over 76.83 hectares. The Union Cabinet has sanctioned Rs 555 crore for the project. The funds will cover the establishment of the temporary campus, construction of the permanent campus, and operational expenses for the institute’s first five years. The central government had approved the establishment of IIM Guwahahati last year as part of efforts to expand access to quality management education. With the inauguration, the institute has launched its executive education programme. The programme has been curated by mentor institute IIM Ahmedabad, and the first batch comprises Assam government officials. The executive course aims to strengthen leadership and management capabilities among public administrators. IIM Ahmedabad will also monitor the temporary academic arrangements. The regular MBA programme at IIM Guwahati is scheduled to commence from the 2026–27 academic year. In his remarks, Prime Minister Modi said the inauguration was a major moment for the Northeast and would strengthen education facilities in the region. He added that the institute would help expand access to quality management education and build academic capacity in the Northeast. The Ministry of Education described IIM Guwahati as a future knowledge destination for holistic human resource development in the region. With academic activities now underway, the institute is expected to attract students from across the country and contribute to the development of professionals and future leaders from the Northeast.
