The calculation is as follows: NTA Score = (100 × Number of candidates in the shift who secured raw scores equal to or less than that of the candidate) ÷ Total number of candidates who appeared in that shift The final ranking for JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 will be prepared by considering the best of the two NTA scores obtained across both sessions, in line with the prescribed policy. Going beyond 100 percentile-rs was the case of Devdutta Majhi from West Bengal, who narrowly missed a perfect score in January with a 99.99921 percentile. She returned in April and secured 100 percentile, becoming one of only two female final toppers that year. Keep in mind that percentile means relative performance compared to all others taking the same possible score, not intelligence, creativity, motivation, or even how successful one will be in the future. There is only eligibility for counselling and mentoring once you pass that score. The JEE percentile system is intended to provide an equitable way to compare performance between two different test administrations of the same test to provide a measure of fairness. It ranks performance based on your test score relative to all others taking the same test, but it does not provide any information about your capabilities in the future. Knowing how to use this system will lessen the confusion about what it conveys, but it should never have anything to do with value. Rank, rather than percentile, is the relevant statistic during the admissions process. Once all students have their percentiles calculated by shift, all shifts are compiled together, and one cumulative All India Rank (AIR) is created. This AIR determines eligibility for counselling and whether you receive a college/university education, and which branch of study you will receive or select. It is possible for a student with less than 100 per cent of equal points total for that examination to have a better AIR than another student with a higher score because his or her percentile was also higher. On the high side of the scale, percentile differences can translate into huge jumps in rank. Going from the 99th percentile to the 99.5th percentile or from the 99.5th percentile to the 99.9th percentile can change your rank by thousands. This happens when high scorers are bunched together in a small area of scores. Just one more right answer can have a huge effect on how you will be ranked. To avoid that possibility, the National Testing Agency normalises the exams with regard to percentiles; that way, students are compared only with other students who have taken the same examination. Percentiles answer the question "What percentage of all students in my shift earned a restricted score?" The calculation is relatively straightforward: determine the number of students who scored below the restricted cut-off in their shift, then divide that number by the total number of students in that shift, and finally multiply by 100 to achieve the percentile. For example, if there are 94,500 students who scored below yours out of a total of 1 lakh students in your shift, you will achieve a percentile of 94.5. Percentiles are not an absolute measure of your performance; this statistic indicates where you are comparatively ranked with respect to other students. For this reason, multiple students who score the same would not necessarily have the same percentiles. Two students might earn 180 points, but if one had a significantly harder paper than the other and had far fewer students in their shift who were able to exceed a score of 180, then their percentile would be higher than the same score from the other student that had a lower difficulty rating and was able to exceed a score of 180 by many other students. Statistically, it is fairer to use a percentile rating, rather than just points. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has postponed the JEE Main session one results. The initial weeks were difficult. Hostel life felt unfamiliar, and homesickness hit harder than I expected. I missed home-cooked food, family conversations, and the comfort of my town. But gradually, things changed. I made friends. We started having tea together at the college canteen, discussing assignments, life, and sometimes just random things. Slowly, the hostel began to feel like another home. I became actively involved in the Writing Club at IIT Mandi because of my interest in poetry and creative expression. Today, I serve as the coordinator of the club. Managing academics along with club responsibilities is not as difficult as it seems — consistency is the key. If you attend lectures regularly and revise daily, you can easily balance everything. One of the most exciting academic experiences here is the Design Practicum course, where students are given Rs 30,000 to build a working product that solves a real-world problem. Opportunities like this truly make IIT different. Most professors here go deep into concepts and genuinely want students to learn. The academic environment constantly pushes you to think critically. Apart from IIT admissions, JEE Main scores are also used for admission into National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Government-funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). The two-session format of JEE Main allows candidates flexibility — either to improve upon their January score or to solidify their standing before Advanced. With over 7.75 lakh students appearing in both sessions in the previous session. As students now await the Session 1 results this year, the NTA has confirmed that while the results were initially scheduled for February 12, they will now be released by February 16 instead. The announcement will determine who moves forward to JEE Advanced and who prepares for another attempt in April. These JEE toppers scored 100 percentile in both JEE Main Session 1 (January) and Session 2 (April): The following 14 candidates achieved the rare feat of securing 100.00 percentile in both sessions of JEE Main 2025: –Ayush Singhal — Rajasthan –Kushagra Gupta — Karnataka –Daksh — Delhi (NCT) –Harsh Jha — Delhi (NCT) –Rajit Gupta — Rajasthan –Shreyas Lohiya — Uttar Pradesh –Saksham Jindal — Rajasthan –Saurav — Uttar Pradesh –Vishad Jain — Maharashtra –Arnav Singh — Rajasthan –Shiven Vikas Toshniwal — Gujarat –Sai Manogna Guthikonda — Andhra Pradesh –Om Prakash Behera — Rajasthan –Bani Brata Majee — Telangana These 14 students had already secured the highest possible NTA score in Session 1, yet, they opted to sit for Session 2. According to NTA data, last year, a total of 12,58,136 candidates appeared in the January 2025 (Session 1) examination. The April (Session 2) examination saw 9,92,350 candidates. Additionally, a total of 7,75,383 candidates appeared in both sessions, reflecting the strategic use of the two-attempt format. The total number of unique candidates across both sessions stood at 14,75,103. For more updates on JEE Main final answer key, result, April application process, and top colleges, click here. The NTA will make the JEE Main 2026 results and cut-off scores available on their official websites: nta.ac.in and jeemain.nta.nic.in. Originally scheduled for February 12, the announcement has now been postponed to February 16, which falls on a Monday. NTA will release JEE session one results by February 16 The NTA percentile score ranges from 0 to 100. A score of 100 indicates the highest performance in that particular session. The percentile does not represent exact marks scored. Instead, it shows the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below a particular candidate. After viewing their percentile, candidates can decide whether to prepare for JEE Advanced, apply to NITs and IIITs, or register for Session 2 to improve their score. Candidates should keep their application number and date of birth ready before attempting to download the scorecard. These details are required to log in to the official portal. The Session 1 result plays a key role in the 2026 engineering admission process. It determines eligibility for advanced exams and admission into top technical institutions across the country. The official scorecard will mention the overall percentile, subject-wise percentile, and category-wise performance. Candidates must carefully verify all the information after downloading the result. For candidates appearing in both sessions, the best score out of the two attempts will be considered for final ranking. This gives students a chance to improve their performance. The National Testing Agency will conduct JEE Main 2026 Session 2 from April 2 to April 9. The exam will be held in two shifts per day in computer-based mode. Candidates who are not satisfied with their Session 1 performance can apply for Session 2. Registrations for JEE Main 2026 Session 2 are open until February 25. After results are declared, candidates can use online college predictor tools to estimate which institutions they may get based on their percentile. These tools provide guidance but do not guarantee admission. Apart from IIT admissions, JEE Main scores are also used for admission into National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Government-funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). Candidates who meet the required cutoff percentile will be eligible to register for JEE Advanced. This examination is necessary for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The marks vs percentile comparison helps candidates estimate their percentile based on their raw score. Since percentile depends on overall performance, it may differ each year depending on exam difficulty and number of candidates. Students should note that no marks are deducted for questions left unanswered. However, incorrect responses result in a deduction of one mark, which can affect the overall score significantly. As per the official marking scheme, candidates are awarded four marks for every correct answer. For each incorrect response, one mark is deducted. No marks are deducted for unanswered questions. For Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, the expected qualifying percentile for JEE Main 2026 Session 1 is likely to be between 61 and 63. The final cutoff will be officially announced by NTA. Candidates from the OBC-NCL category can expect the qualifying percentile to fall between 79 and 81. These expected figures are subject to change based on overall performance and competition levels this year. For candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), the expected qualifying percentile is likely to range between 80 and 81. The official cutoff will be confirmed along with the result declaration. The expected qualifying percentile for the General category in JEE Main 2026 is likely to be between 93 and 94. These figures are based on previous trends and may vary slightly once the official cutoff is announced. Through the normalisation process, NTA converts candidates’ raw marks into a percentile score that ranges from 100 to 0. This percentile shows how a candidate performed compared to others who appeared in the same session. The National Testing Agency follows a normalisation method to ensure fairness in evaluation. Since the exam is conducted in multiple shifts with different difficulty levels, raw marks are converted into percentile scores using a standardised formula. Out of the total number of candidates who appeared, approximately 2.5 lakh students are expected to qualify for the next stage. Qualification will allow them to either appear for JEE Advanced or seek admission in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Around 13.5 lakh candidates appeared for the JEE Main 2026 Session 1 examination. The exam was conducted in multiple shifts, making it one of the largest engineering entrance tests in the country. Although the result date has been fixed as February 16, the National Testing Agency has not yet shared the exact time when the scorecards will be made available. Students are advised to regularly check the official portals for timely updates. The National Testing Agency has officially announced that the JEE Main 2026 Session 1 result will be declared by February 16. While the exact time of release has not been confirmed, candidates can expect the scorecards to be uploaded on the official websites before the deadline. ### The results for session one will be announced by February 16. In addition to the results, the NTA will release the final answer key, which will allow candidates to estimate their probable scores based on the JEE Main marking scheme. More than 13 lakh candidates appeared for the exam, competing for seats in various engineering, architecture, and planning programmes. The NTA uses a normalisation process to convert raw marks into a standardised NTA score or percentile ranging from 100 to 0, ensuring fairness across different shifts and exam papers.
