The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has received over Rs 70 crore from the batch of 2000 at the Silver Jubilee reunion. According to the institute, this is the highest pledge announced by a single graduating batch across all academic years. The majority of the pledged amount will be directed towards the General Endowment of IIT Delhi, a statement from the Institute said, adding that this will provide IIT Delhi with long-term financial flexibility to support a wide range of initiatives, including strengthening academic programmes, advancing research and innovation, supporting student scholarships and faculty excellence, and enabling philanthropic and strategic priorities aligned with IIT Delhi’s evolving needs. The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) announced the launch of Centre for Creative Arts (CCA) on January 1. According to an official statement, the Centre has been established within the Department of Liberal Arts and is aimed at integrating creative practices with technical and scientific education at the institute. Creative and liberal arts have been part of IIT Hyderabad’s academic structure for over a decade. The programme was formalised in 2014, beginning with heritage tours for first-year students and later expanding into credited courses. At present, nearly 10 per cent of the undergraduate curriculum includes liberal and creative arts components, covering areas such as photography, fine arts, performing arts, and crafts, according to the institute. The Centre for Creative Arts will offer one to three credit courses in creative and performing arts for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Centre will also appoint performing artists as adjunct faculty and distinguished professors. Artist-in-Residence programmes are planned to allow sustained engagement between students and practitioners, while collaborations are expected to bring artistic perspectives into engineering, science, and design education. In a move aimed at making the JEE Advanced exam “a better and less stressful assessment,” the IIT Council has recommended that an expert committee evaluate the possibility of making the test adaptive, where questions are dynamically generated and adjusted in real-time depending on the candidate’s ability. The Council, which is the apex coordination body of the premier institutes, has also recommended that an optional adaptive test be held as a pilot ahead of the next JEE Advanced exam this year for data to be collected on performance. According to the minutes of the meeting, IIT Kanpur Director Prof Manindra Agrawal shared concerns regarding the current structure of JEE Advanced, which is the common entrance exam for the IITs, the prevalence of a huge coaching industry, and the significant emotional and financial stress on families. The IIT Council then recommended that a panel led by the JEE Apex Board (JAB) and IIT Kanpur consider the proposal, the operational logistics involved and its potential to reduce dependency on coaching, according to the minutes. As per the JEECUP schedule announced by the council, the 2026 academic session exam for groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, L, K1 to K8 will be conducted in online mode between the above-mentioned dates. In 2025, the UPJEE Polytechnic exam was held between May 20 and May 28, 2025. The JEECUP examination is a state-level entrance test conducted for admission to diploma-level polytechnic programmes in engineering, technology, and management. A “Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC)” scheme to attract top Indian-origin researchers and scientists is in the works, with a proposal to engage 120 research fellows and research chairs over five years. The IIT Council — the apex coordination body of the IITs — was informed of this at its last meeting. An official in the Education Ministry presented the proposal on the Prime Minister Research Chair scheme to “attract and engage global talent of Indian origin” – at the IIT council meeting in August last year, going by the minutes of the meeting, which were released on Monday. The scheme aims to attract top Indian-origin researchers and scientists to “strengthen India’s higher education and research ecosystem,” according to the minutes. The scheme proposes to engage 120 fellows across three categories – ‘Young Research Fellows’, ‘Senior Research Fellows’, and ‘Research Chairs’ over five years. “The scheme will focus on 14 nationally significant priority sectors, including semiconductors, AI, clean energy, and advanced materials. The scheme seeks to improve institutional research capacity, boost innovation, and enhance India’s global standing in science, technology, and academic excellence,” the minutes stated. It added that “the Council was made aware of the in-principle agreement for the Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme, with the understanding that the initiative will be launched soon in a structured, large-scale way to attract and engage global talent of Indian origin.” Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) inaugurated a new supercomputing facility at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The facility is called PARAM Rudra. It has been set up by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). The facility is designed to support advanced research and high-performance computing needs. The three Peta FLOPS high-performance computing (HPC) system has been developed and deployed under the Build Approach of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). PARAM Rudra is based on indigenously designed Rudra servers developed by C-DAC and manufactured in India. The system is powered by C-DAC’s indigenous software stack and incorporates advanced Direct Contact Liquid Cooling (DCLC) technology for enhanced efficiency. In his address, Prof Abhay Karandikar highlighted that the facility will significantly strengthen computational research, benefiting over 200 faculty members and 1,200 students at IIT Bombay, as well as researchers nationwide. Female enrollment across five Indian Institutes of Technology has nearly doubled over the last seven years, rising from 1,621 in 2018 to 3,247 in 2025. The growth rate among women has consistently outpaced that of men. And yet, the gender gap has not narrowed, but widened. The 2024 placement season marked a noticeable improvement in overall placement conversion at IIT Tirupati. According to placement statistics, the overall BTech placement percentage rose to 83.82 per cent. Circuital branches led this recovery, with Computer Science and Engineering reporting a placement rate of over 91 per cent, followed closely by Electrical Engineering at nearly 89 per cent. Mechanical and Civil Engineering also recorded better outcomes compared to the previous year, while Chemical Engineering showed moderate improvement. Median packages in 2024 were more tightly distributed across branches, with an overall median of Rs 11 lakh per annum. Electrical Engineering reported the highest median package at Rs 12 lakh per annum, while CSE followed closely. In the 2023 graduating BTech batch, IIT Tirupati recorded a total of 189 registered students across five core branches, out of which 120 students were placed, resulting in an overall BTech placement rate of 63.49 per cent. Placement outcomes varied significantly by branch. Computer Science and Engineering led in terms of salary outcomes, reporting the highest average and median packages, while Mechanical Engineering recorded the lowest placement percentage among the five branches. Despite lower conversion rates in some disciplines, salary ranges extended up to Rs 46 lakh per annum, indicating selective but high-value offers. Branch-wise data shows that CSE maintained a placement rate of over 77 per cent, with an average CTC exceeding Rs 25 lakh per annum. Electrical and Civil Engineering recorded placement percentages in the mid-60s, while Chemical Engineering performed slightly better than Mechanical Engineering in terms of placement ratio. Median salaries across most branches clustered between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 16.5 lakh per annum, underlining relatively strong compensation for those who secured offers. An analysis of the choice count data for IIT Palakkad shows a sharp and uniform rise in student interest across all undergraduate engineering programmes in 2025 compared to the previous year. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) continues to be the most preferred programme, with the choice count rising from 12,851 in 2024 to 15,581 in 2025 — an increase of over 21.2 per cent. Notably, Data Science and Engineering recorded the highest percentage growth among all branches, registering a nearly 24 per cent jump in choice count. The programme saw its numbers increase from 10,134 last year to 12,560 in 2025, underlining students’ growing inclination towards specialised, industry-oriented courses aligned with emerging technology trends. Core engineering branches also witnessed robust growth. Electrical Engineering saw a 21.4 per cent increase, with choice counts rising from 10,173 to 12,354, while Mechanical Engineering recorded a 20.7 per cent rise, moving from 9,534 to 11,504 choices. Civil Engineering, traditionally considered less preferred at newer institutes, also posted a healthy 20.4 per cent growth, crossing the 10,000-choice mark this year. A look at year-wise placement trends at IIT Jammu shows an overall improvement in both batch size and compensation levels over time. The 2022–23 placement season saw the highest salary package rising to Rs 53 LPA, up from Rs 43 LPA in 2020–21. While a moderation in average salary was noted in later cycles, overall placement percentages remained strong. In 2022–23, around 85 per cent of registered students were placed, matching the placement rate recorded in 2021–22 and significantly higher than 2020–21. The number of companies visiting the campus also increased steadily, reflecting expanding recruiter engagement as the institute matured. As per the official placement report released by IIT Jammu, BTech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering recorded the highest salary packages of up to Rs 52 LPA. These branches also reported strong average and median salaries, pointing to sustained recruiter demand for core technical skill sets. According to the IIT Jammu placement 2025 info, the institute recorded a placement rate of 70.8 per cent, with a significant proportion of students also opting for alternative career routes. About 13.5 per cent of graduates pursued higher education or government roles, underscoring the diversity of post-graduation pathways chosen by students.
