Multiple explosions struck Iran’s capital, Tehran, on Saturday after Israel claimed it launched a “preventive missile attack” on the country, witnesses told news agency Associated Press. Videos from Tehran showed thick smoke rising up over a large area. The smoke was visible from several kilometres away. The explosion comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme. > ISRAEL LAUNCH ‘PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE’ ON TEHRAN — RT EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE pic.twitter.com/UOmD66Mk1Q — RT (@RT_com) February 28, 2026 ISRAEL LAUNCH ‘PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE’ ON TEHRAN — RT EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE pic.twitter.com/UOmD66Mk1Q — RT (@RT_com) February 28, 2026 The operation was jointly planned for months with the United States and the launch date was decided weeks ago, an Israeli defence official told Reuters. United President Donald Trump, confirming US’ role in the attack, said that his country had begun “major combat operations in Iran”. He claimed Iran to have continued to develop its nuclear programme and planned to develop missiles to reach the US. The blasts occurred after an earlier strike apparently targeted an area near the offices of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, AP reported, adding that authorities have offered no official casualty information from the strikes. According to an official quoted by Reuters, Khamenei is currently not in Tehran and has been transferred to a secure location. Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz claimed that his country has declared a state of emergency. “The State of Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel,” he said. > – Reuters: Israel said it launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran– The New York Times, citing a U.S. official: U.S. strikes on Iran underway.– A source told Reuters that Khamenei, was not in Tehran and had been transferred to a secure location pic.twitter.com/jbOCt8zY4A — Ehsan Eghbal Eslami (@Ehsaneghbale) February 28, 2026 – Reuters: Israel said it launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran– The New York Times, citing a U.S. official: U.S. strikes on Iran underway.– A source told Reuters that Khamenei, was not in Tehran and had been transferred to a secure location pic.twitter.com/jbOCt8zY4A — Ehsan Eghbal Eslami (@Ehsaneghbale) February 28, 2026 Moreover, Israel’s military said it had protectively sounded air raid sirens in areas across the country “to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward Israel” in retaliation, as per news agency Reuters. It announced the closure of schools and workplaces, with exceptions for essential sectors, and a ban on public airspace. Israel closed its airspace to civilian flights, and the airports authority asked the public not to go to any of the country’s airports, the report stated. > 💥BREAKING: Explosions reported in Tehran.
